How to Train Your Dragon (2025)

Out of all the live-action remakes of animated films to be released in the last few years, How to Train Your Dragon is the one that sounded too soon, and too perfect to touch more than any of the others. However, it winds up standing out among many of the other remakes that come to mind. Director Dean DeBlois sets out to retell the story of Berk and its vikings and dragons in realistic glory, but also sticks so closely to his original film’s visual palette that there almost isn’t anything new here. Large amounts of dialogue, if not the entire script, are also beat for beat exactly the same, so if you remember the original film quite well, it’s like watching a film you’ve already seen be enhanced and remastered. Though the first film is so wonderful that it doesn’t leave much need for improvements, making a new film should be justified by making some changes and additions to the story, not to mention much from the source material that the film was based on that we haven’t yet seen.

Mason Thames manages to make the role of Hiccup his own, while Gerard Butler is a standout reprising his role as Stoick from the animated trilogy. His hard exterior and brutal attitude towards dragons that develops from his fear and desire to protect his son and tribe are prominent. The production design and CGI effects work very well to form engaging action scenes — even if it takes a lot of getting used to that Toothless looks the exact same as he did in the animated version but is now interacting with live-action settings. Nico Parker is wonderful as Astrid, and her bond with Hiccup also stands out, particularly his earning of her trust. The supporting teen characters unfortunately feel like they’re doing imitations of their previous version, though Nick Frost entertains as Gobber.

Some scenes manage to carry the beauty over into this version, including Hiccup and Toothless’ initial bonding, and the former’s romantic flight with Astrid. Still, you’re sometimes left to wonder why it wouldn’t have hurt to change some more lines or backdrops, or even some add in some new story beats when you’re making a new film, after all. The real magic here that holds it all together is John Powell’s score. His themes enrich the world and the tone when they could’ve lacked in this new iteration otherwise. The movie’s insistence on staying so close that numerous scenes are a shot-for-shot copy and paste can frustrate, but its lack of originality doesn’t fully take away from the heart and vibrance that’s still here, even if in a lower capacity. For those discovering the story for the first time, though, it will certainly deliver with its themes of empathy and teamwork.

The Wild Robot

ROZZUM unit 7134, or “Roz” for short, is an intelligent robot who finds herself shipwrecked on an island, where she learns to coexist with the animals living there and becomes the adopted parent of an orphaned baby goose, all as the rest of robot-kind awaits her return.

The Wild Robot breathes new life into themes we’ve explored plenty in animated films. The animation is absolutely gorgeous; the storybook-esque coloring that DreamWorks also embraced with Puss in Boots: The Last Wish makes the forest Roz explores look stunning, and makes room for creative liberties with some of the coloring — overly red fires look beautiful in the night sky, and water looks absolutely magnificent. The movie isn’t overly concerned with shoving in action sequences for the sake of youngsters’ attention, nor does it feel pressed to pace itself quicker; the time jumps and lower stakes often benefit the film. Lupita Nyong’o was likely the only person who could’ve voiced Roz with such audacious surprise and innocent gentleness, capturing her eagerness to help, learn, and soon, live the way she wants with and for whom she wants. Pedro Pascal, Kit Connor, Mark Hamill, and Catherine O’Hara round out the great batch of animal voices, though Stephanie Hsu especially kills it as an antagonist.

Though there are moments earlier in The Wild Robot where the animal chase scenes may feel more child-aimed, the movie wisely strips its themes down to the core, about difference and found family, and of course, kindness, to feel fresh and fascinating even compared to many other animated films that have been about the exact same thing. It’s a film that’s sure to touch as much as it will entertain, and the visual and emotional experience of the film together will resonate with all ages. Is it DreamWorks’ best film since the How To Train Your Dragon movies? Perhaps, but it’s also sure to stand the test of time as strongly as some of their greatest classics.

Kung Fu Panda 4

This is a franchise that’s stood the test of time in the world of modern animation, and Jack Black has always been the core of why Po has resonated with audiences for so long — and perhaps the main reason this film manages to entertain at all. Though Kung Fu Panda 4 still has a vibrant and silly energy, it no longer manages to up the ante as each of the past installments did. Though Jack Black is always a huge delight as Po, and possibly one of the best animated franchise leads we’ve ever been graced with, the film often struggles to justify its existence because Po’s journey and growth doesn’t feel as natural and potent as it did in the other films. His struggles to embrace change and pass down the mantle of Dragon Warrior don’t feel fleshed out or as vital to his path. Awkwafina also gives one of her more memorable voice performances and is a great pairing with Black. It’s fun to see Viola Davis as menacing and cunning as she is here, but we don’t spend enough time with the Chameleon to buy her motives and for her to resonate with us. Her characteristics ultimately feel derivative of Lord Shen and Kai from the other movies.

The film embraces the faster pace and editing that worked in the third movie, but the editing decisions sometimes feel even too cartoonish and take you out of the moment. The animation is still lively, but looks a little simplistic compared to the beautifully detailed skies and characters in the last two films. There’s also a side plot that didn’t need as much time as it got, and some inconsistencies with the rules of this world of kung fu that may clash with the rules from the other films. The explanation for the Furious Five’s absence also feels tacked on and too evidently a behind-the-scenes thing. The action and looks are always fun, as is Jack Black being so committed to bringing us all joy and laughs. Is it a fun time in the Valley of Peace? Sure. But it’s clear that the franchise may be out of things to say as it feels we’ve reached the epilogue chapter here.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

Puss in Boots discovers that his passion for adventure has taken its toll: he has burnt through eight of his nine lives. With the help of old and new allies — and with some new foes in the way — Puss sets out on an epic journey to find the mythical Last Wish and restore his nine lives.

Eleven years after the first spin-off focusing on Puss in Boots was released, it wasn’t really necessary to continue or dive back into the franchise, but The Last Wish absolutely tops the first movie. Antonio Banderas is having a blast as a role that may at this point be as iconic to his name as Zorro, not to mention the characters bear plenty of similarities. Florence Pugh and John Mulaney also give the film so much with their voice performances, and Olivia Colman and Ray Winstone almost feel like they were born to voice Mama and Papa Bear, not to mention a menacing Wolf voiced by Wagner Moura. Unlike the more realistic animation of the first Puss in Boots, this blend of 3D animation with 2D coloring to create a storybook look feels reminiscent of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, The Mitchells vs the Machines, and The Bad Guys. Though the frame rate or 2D look of some shots occasionally distracts, the animation ultimately creates for a more colorful and visually impressive experience than the first movie, not to mention the well-paced and engaging action. The movie also pushes Puss to new places as a character — he’s forced to confront his pride, mortality, fears and motives and we feel like we’re watching the animated feline find some genuine growth by the end. But most importantly, its sweet, energetic, and playful intentions definitely translate to the final product, despite some overused jokes or themes that aren’t unfamiliar to animated films. It delivers a reward for families that exceeds expectations, and one of the year’s best animated films alongside films like Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio and Turning Red.

How to Train Your Dragon 2

How to Train Your Dragon 2 takes place five years after the events of How to Train Your Dragon: The citizens of the island of Berk now domesticate dragons instead of hunting them; Hiccup and his friends are now adults rather than teens (he’s 20); and he and Astrid are engaged. One day, while exploring new territories, Hiccup and his dragon bestie, Toothless, and Astrid and her dragon, Stormfly, discover both a fort covered in ice and, later, a dragon hunter named Eret, who accuses them of being the “dragon rider” who’s letting his dragon captives go. Hiccup and Astrid get away but soon discover that Eret’s maniacal boss, Drago, plans to declare war on Berk and steal all of the island’s dragons. Meanwhile, Hiccup makes an even bigger discovery: The “dragon rider” is actually none other than his presumed-dead mother, Valka, now a recluse who lives with dragons who are all commanded by a protective alpha. Against all odds, Hiccup and his crew must stand against Drago’s army and hope their dragons can resist the pull of the bloodthirsty alpha dragon under the warmonger’s control.

Sometimes it’s hard to enjoy sequels more than the original, especially if it’s an animated movies, since most animated sequels were pointless and dumb. But How to Train Your Dragon 2 is very enjoyable and makes us think more about the rest of the trilogy (most animated sequels have been crappy enough that the filmmakers decide not to continue the series). Unlike other animated movies, this one doesn’t have any humor, but that’s not what you need to look for in in this movie. The movie is filled with heart, has a great soundtrack and visuals. Dragons 2 feels like the Dark Knight of animated trilogies. It seems likely that Dragons will soon become an unforgettable movie trilogy, just like may others (X-Men, Hobbit, etc.).

Unlike animated rip-offs that have been only targeted for little kids (such as Rio 2 or Epic), Dragons 2 also includes themes that adults can relate to, like a mother-and-son relationship subplot. The fact that adults can enjoy this movie and not just kids makes this movie so much better to watch. From this movie, I can conclude one thing: DreamWorks will never stop making great movies.
