The 2016 Golden Slice Awards

The Oscars are coming up tomorrow night, so over the past month, I held my own Oscar ceremony! Instead of simply the FilmToppings Oscars, I have decided to call my Oscar ceremonies the Golden Slice Awards from now on, as it’s a fun name that also relates to my site’s name and theme! I’d like to thank my followers on Instagram for voting for these categories, so you guys are the ones who determined these results! Not all my nominees for categories that are also in the Oscars are exactly the same, I took some movies and performances that you guys especially loved as well. I held most of the same categories as last time, including a new category that I started this year. So without further ado, here are the winners of this year’s Golden Slice Awards:

I feel that the results of the Oscars will be very similar to most of these, although some of the performances/movies that won here weren’t nominated in that category by the Academy. Anyway, the Oscars are tomorrow night, and hopefully all our predictions are right!

I am mostly satisfied with these nominees, although I have a few concerns, and found some snubs on the list. First off, I don’t understand why Christian Bale is credited as a Supporting Actor, for he was the main star of his film The Big Short. Also, I feel that Aaron Sorkin should have been nominated for writing Steve Jobs, and although I have yet to see the film, he won the Golden Globe for writing the film, and Sorkin always knows how to write fantastic screenplays. Also, Quentin Tarantino probably deserves a nomination for writing The Hateful Eight, although it would be cool to see Ex Machina, an excellent, underrated science fiction movie that exceeded expectations in every way, win that award. I am also very surprised that neither Carol nor Steve Jobs received Best Picture nominations. It seems like The Revenant, Mad Max: Fury Road, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens may end up sweeping up most of the awards this year. There is only one way to find out: to watch the Oscars on February 28 to determine if my predictions were right!

The 73rd Golden Globe Awards

Tonight was the night that the 73rd Golden Globe Awards took place. The ceremony was hosted By Ricky Gervais, who turned out to be a decent host. He was able to make me crack up a few times with his smart humor. Although I still have yet to see most of the winning films, I feel urged to right now, and I feel glad for all the winners because of how much I love the stars and filmmakers who won tonight. Here is the list of winners for the film categories:

Best Picture – Drama: The Revenant

Best Picture – Comedy: The Martian

Best Director: Alejandro Gonzalez  Inarritu – The Revenant

Best Actor – Drama: Leonardo DiCaprio – The Revenant

Best Actress – Drama: Brie Larson – Room

Best Actor – Comedy: Matt Damon – The Martain

Best Actress – Comedy: Jennifer Lawrence – Joy

Best Supporting Actor: Sylvester Stallone – Creed

Best Supporting Actress: Kate Winslet – Steve Jobs

Best Screenplay: Aaron Sorkin – Steve Jobs

Best Original Score: Ennio Morricone – The Hateful Eight

Best Original Song: “Writing’s on the Wall” by Sam Smith – Spectre

Best Animated Feature Film: Inside Out

Best Foreign Language Film: Son of Saul (Hungary)

I couldn’t have been more thrilled by these winners. I feel more urged to see these films now, not that I didn’t want to before. When DiCaprio won the award, he received such a standing ovation, and I could tell that he knew the Oscar was finally coming his way. Sly’s won also received a standing ovation, having won an Oscar for the same role 40 years ago, so it felt great to see him win for a character spread across generations. My only disappointment is the song “Writing’s on the Wall” winning over “See You Again” (from Furious 7), because I feel like that award belongs to the late and great Paul Walker (to whom “See You Again” was made for and dedicated to), and besides, the latest James Bond theme wasn’t that great. I am surprised that The Revenant won as much as it did, and I hope it does just as well at the Oscars. Let’s hope this year’s Oscars are just as rewarding, and hopefully I’ll see all the winning movies from tonight by then!

Please check out my YouTube channel!

I have recently put up a YouTube channel for which I will be posting videos about movies. For example, I’ll be talking about movies I’ve seen, one’s I’m awaiting, top 10 movie lists, and much more! Check out my first two videos below:

The FilmToppings Summer Movie Awards 2015

I recently held my 2nd annual summer movie awards on Instagram. You guys voted for the following categories. Here are the results:

Best Cinematography: Mad Max: Fury Road

Best Visual Effects: Jurassic World

Best Score/Soundtrack: The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

Best Director: George Miller – Mad Max: Fury Road

Best Actor: Paul Rudd – Ant-Man

Best Actress; Charlize Theron – Mad Max: Fury Road

Worst Movie: Fantastic Four

Best Movie: Mad Max: Fury Road

Those are the winners of this Summer’s movie awards! A few Honorable Mentions, movies that were nominated a lot but didn’t win anything, include Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Tomorrowland, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Inside Out. I honestly thought this Summer was mostly a lazy time for movies, as it was filled with disappointments. However, a few movies, including ones that won, managed to live up to my expectations. Let’s see if these movies have luck in my Oscars at the end of the year!

Also, I have a YouTube channel that is up and I will start posting videos on it very soon!

The 87th Academy Awards (The Oscars)

This Sunday was The 87th Oscars, and it was awesome! Neil Patrick Harris was a hilarious host, and I definitely had a fun time watching the awards. I was surprised by some of the results, but not unhappy with them. Here are the results:

Best Picture: Birdman
Best Director: Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu
Best Actor: Eddie Redmayne – The Theory of Everything
Best Actress: Julianne Moore – Still Alice
Best Supporting Actor: J.K. Simmons – Whiplash

Best Production Design: The Grand Budapest Hotel
Best Makeup and Hairstyling: The Grand Budapest Hotel
Best Costume Design: The Grand Budapest Hotel
Best Animated Short: Feast
Best Visual Effects: Interstellar
Best Sound Editing: American Sniper

I think How to Train Your Dragon 2 should have won Best Animated Feature, Whiplash should have won Best Adapted Screenplay, and Interstellar should have won Best Original Score, Production Design, and Sound Editing. But other than that, I really enjoyed the Oscars this year! What did you guys think?

The FilmToppings Oscars 2014

2014 was agreat year for movies. Who cares if this year’s Oscar nominees were disappointing? I decided to hold my own own awards competition back from December to earlier this month, so here are the results, according to you guys:

The 72nd Golden Globe Awards

Last night was The Golden Globe Awards! It was awesome! Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were hilarious, and the show was great! Here are the winners for movie categories:

Best Picture – Drama:
Boyhood

Best Picture – Comedy:
The Grand Budapest Hotel

Best Actor in a Drama:
Eddie Redmayne – Theory of Everything

Best Actor in a Comedy:
Michael Keaton – Birdman

Best Actress in a Drama:
Julianne Moore – Still Alice

Best Actress in a Comedy:
Any Adams – Big Eyes

Best Supporting Actor:
J.K Simmons – Whiplash

Best Supporting Actress:
Patricia Arquette – Boyhood

Best Screenplay:
Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu – Birdman

Best Director:
Richard Linklater – Boyhood

Best Animated Film:
How To Train Your Dragon 2

My thoughts on the winners:
I wish Benedict Cumberbatch won instead of Eddie Redmayne, and Birdman should have won Best Comedy instead of The Grand Budapest Hotel. They are both great movies, but I think Birdman is the better film. But I think that Birdman is in no way a comedy. It is definitely a drama. I am also very bummed that Interstellar did not win Best Score. But I am very happy that JK Simmons won best Supporting Actor, and Selma won Best Original Song. I think The Imitation Game should have won Best Drama, but then again, I haven’t seen Boyhood yet. I really wish Whiplash was nominated for Best Drama, though. And I wish Emma Stone won Best Supporting Actress. I’m glad How to Train Your Dragon 2 won Best Animated Feature instead of the highly over hyped (but still good) Lego Movie. There were a few winners I wasn’t all happy with, but there is still the Oscars next month!

A Tribute to Robin Williams

A week ago, the world lost Robin Williams, a hilarious comic genius who made the whole world laugh. He was admired and beloved by all his fans, who are all very sad now. He managed to make the whole world happy, but apparently not himself. Robin committed suicide because he was in deep depression. On August 12, a day after he was found dead, a police officer confirmed that Williams had hanged himself with a belt.He may have had a great time onstage, but behind the screen his life was completely different. He was very sick and he was depressed, so I guess he killed himself.

I have not seen all of his well-known films but I have seen many of them. My favorite is Mrs. Doubtfire, a comedy about an actor (played by Robin Williams) disguises himself as a female housekeeper to spend time with his children held in custody by his former wife. That movie seriously cracked me up! It’s one of my favorite comedies! Also, he really rocked as the Genie in Aladdin. The movie itself was OK but the Genie stole the whole show! I’ve heard about many other of his great movies, like Good Will Hunting and Good Morning Vietnam. I haven’t seen those ones yet but now I plan to. Robin Williams was definitely one of the funniest actors I know and he will always be remembered, along with his movies and his roles.

The 2014 MTV Movie Awards

This Sunday was the MTV Movie Awards, which were hosted by Conan O’Brien this time and included performances by Eminem and Rihanna, as well as Ellie Goulding and Zedd. At the beginning, a new record of 50 celebrities made cameos randomly, including Andy Samberg, Seth Rogen, Mindy Kaling, Ed Helms, Ashton Kutcher, Shaun White, Skrillex, Lupita Nyong’o, Russell Crowe, Logan Lerman, Martin Scorsese, Ellen Page, Jim Parsons, James Franco, Adam Sandler, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Ice Cube, Chris Pratt, Jessica Alba, Paul Rudd, Charles Barkley, Grumpy Cat, and Conan O’Brien himself. There were many great events and award categories, as well as Paul Walker, who died in a tragic car accident in November, being paid tribute to. Mark Wahlberg (who is currently my favorite actor) accepted the MTV Generation Award, and Channing Tatum accepted the Trailblazer Award.

Here is the list of winners:

Best Movie: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Best Male Performance: Josh Hutcherson in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Best Female Performance: Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Best Shirtless Performance: Zac Efron in That Awkward Moment

Best Fight: Orlando Bloom and Evangeline Lily vs. The Orcs (in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug)
