Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters

My rating: ratings3

The film begins with 4 young Half-Bloods (Luke (Jake Abel), Grover (Brandon T. Jackson), Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario), and Thalia) running to Camp Half-Blood, but only 3 make it because Thalia sacrificed herself to get the other three Half-Bloods to the camp. Her father, Zeus, turns her into a tree which creates a barrier, protecting the camp from intruders. Seven years later, Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman) discovers that the Tree of Thalia has been poisoned by Luke, and the only antidote is the Golden Fleece, which is located in the Sea of Monsters, what humans call the Bermuda Triangle. Percy, Annabeth, Grover, Clarisse (Leven Rambin), another Half-Blood and Tyson (Douglas Smith), a Cyclops who is Percy’s half-brother, must journey there to retrieve the Fleece.

I saw this movie last week. I liked it, but I thought that the first Percy Jackson movie was better. The film did have a few flaws, though, including that Pierce Brosnan isn’t in it! Instead, an old guy named Anthony Head plays Chiron. Also, Polympheus was way smaller than I imagined. And Anabeth’s hair is blond; in the first movie her hair is red.

But if you haven’t seen the first movie or read the bboks, you might enjoy it more than I did, like my friend, who saw the movie with me and hadn’t seen the first one yet or read the books, but still really enjoyed the film. There were also a few parts that made us laugh. I would recommend this movie for kids 11 and up, because the film is very violent, frightening, and has some language.

Jobs

My rating: ratings2

Ashton Kutcher plays Steve Jobs in this movie, which tells you about how Apple was created, and how Steve Jobs changed the world of technology. The film manages to deliver a message: You can do the impossible as long as you believe it, but if you don’t, you will not succeed. In other words, some people see what’s possible, other’s change what’s possible.  Josh Gad hilariously plays Steve Wozniak, Jobs’ childhood friend, partner and co-founder of Apple. Dermot Mulroney plays Mike Markkula, who invested in Apple in 1976 and eventually started working there, while Matthew Modine plays John Sculley, the former CEO of Pepsi, who soon becomes the CEO of Apple and forces Jobs out of the company in 1985, and Luke Haas plays Daniel Kottke, Jobs’ friend.

Ashton Kutcher is an amazing actor in this movie. In the first scene, which shows Jobs presenting the iPod at an Apple Town Hall meeting in 2001, for a second I thought it was the real Steve Jobs! After about an hour, the movie started to get a little boring, so I think older people would enjoy this movie more than I did. This film is filled with laughs and great acting, but I don’t think this movie is appropriate for kids under 14 because there is a lot of language. But if you are 14 and over, I think you would really enjoy this movie and laugh a lot from it.

Turbo

My rating: ratings3

Theo is an ordinary garden snail. He works 24/7 at the garden and dreams of someday racing in the Indianapolis 500, like his idol, Guy Gagne. One day, he gets into a freak accident when he gets sucked up into the supercharger of a street race car, fusing his DNA with Nitrous Oxide. Theo now has super-speed and calls himself Turbo. He makes friends with some more snails, a taco driver named Tito, and Tito’s friends, and together they go to Indianapolis so Turbo can compete in the Indy 500 and live his dream.

This movie, distributed by Dreamworks Animation, is filled with laughs and a lot of heart. I also think the storyline was very well-written. All of the film’s character’s were very funny, even though the minions from Despicable Me 2 are 10 times funnier. The film’s amazing cast includes Ryan Reynolds, Paul Giamatti, Michael Pena, Luiz Guzman, Bill Hader, Michelle Rodriguez, Richard Jenkins, Ken Jeong, Maya Rudolph, Snoop Dogg, and Samuel L. Jackson. I would recommend this movie for kids 6 and up, because there are some things little kids might not understand. Overall the movie was funny and cute, but it was a little too short and is very predictable, too.

The Way Way Back

My rating: ratings3

Duncan (Liam James), a 14-year-old boy, goes to a beach house for the summer with his mm, her boyfriend, Trent (Steve Carell), and Trent’s daughter. At a water park near the beach house, Duncan makes friends with Owen (Sam Rockwell) an employee at the water park, who changes his life. This movie also stars Toni Collette, Allison Janney, Anna Sophia Robb, Maya Rudolph, Amanda Peet, and Rob Corddry.

I saw this movie last week. I thought it was very funny. It had a great cast, especially Sam Rockwell, who was hilarious! Although the film was a little too short, it was good, but not great. This isn’t the best movie I’ve seen this month, but it wasn’t so bad, either. I would recommend this movie for people 13 and over and people who like coming-of-age movies.

Pacific Rim

My rating: ratings4

In the near future, giant creatures called the Kaiju (which is the Japanese word for monster) arrive on Earth via portal in the bottom of the Pacific ocean and attack Earth, taking millions of lives. To end this apocalypse, Stacker Pentecost (played by Idris Elba) creates the Jaeger (which is the German word for hunter) Program. Jaegars are huge robots who are piloted by two humans whose minds are connected. One of the Jaegers, Gipsy Danger, is piloted by Raleigh Becket (played by Charlie Hunnam) and his brother, Yancy. One day, Yancy is killed by a Kaiju, and Raleigh retires from being Gipsy Danger’s pilot. 5 years later, Raleigh is rerecruited by Pentecost to pilot Gipsy Danger along with Pentecost’s adopted daughter, Mako Mori, who’s family was killed by a Kaiju when she was a kid. Now it is  up to them to defeat the remaining Kaijus and destroy the portal.

I saw this movie recently with my grandfather. We both really enjoyed it. It was funny and had great visual effects. The 3D and acting were also great. Even though Guillermo del Toro’s movies aren’t the best, I have to admit that this one was really good. I would recommend this movie for anyone who loves science fiction movies.

Jurassic Park 3D

My rating: ratings5

Can you believe it? It is the 20th anniversary of the Spielberg classic Jurassic Park. To celebrate, Universal Pictures has rereleased it in 3D. I saw it recently and loved it! The 3D is incredible! The movie itself was great, too. The visual effects are amazing! The actors are good, too. The film is about 2 paleontologists who are invited to Jurassic Park by its founder, John Hammond. They are joined by a mathmetician and Hammond’s 2 grandchildren. Together they go on a tour of the park until the T-Rex escapes and things go wrong. I think that the whole family will enjoy this movie. You can own Jurassic Park on Blu-Ray 3D today!

Now You See Me

My rating: ratings3

Four magicians (played by Jesse Eisenberg, Isla Fisher, Woody Harrelson, and Dave Franco) are united and start pulling off bank robberies during performances and reward their audiences with the money. Meanwhile, an FBI agent (played by Mark Ruffalo) and an Interpol agent (played by Melanie Laurent), are assigned to track down these illusionists. This movie also stars Oscar winners Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman.

I saw this movie this week and I have to admit, it was better than I expected. The first ten or fifteen minutes of the movie are pretty boring and did not pull me in, and I thought that the rest of the movie will also be like this, but later it starts getting more interesting and thrilling. The cast is pretty good, and so is the directing and most of the story. I think that the best actor in the movie was Woody Harrelson, because he was the most entertaining and fun to watch here. The movie’s script sometimes does not work throughout the movie and often the plot makes little sense, but at the end it is very enjoyable and different than just any crime film. It would be worth watching, and I would especially recommend it for fans of crime and heist movies.

Grown Ups 2

My rating: ratings3

Attention, all Adam Sandler fans! Grown Ups 2 is now in theaters. I saw this movie a few days ago and my stomach hurt from laughing so much! Lenny (Adam Sandler) has now relocated his family to the small town where he and his friends (Kevin James, Chris Rock, and David Spade) grew up. The film takes place on the last day of school, in which the grown ups are acting more childish and their children are now growing up. This movie also stars Salma Hayek, Maya Rudolph, Maria Bello, Nick Swardson, Taylor Lautner, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, and Shaquille O’Neal (surprisingly) as a cop(plus hundreds of more cameos).

I think this movie is as funny as the first Grown Ups movie. There is just one thing I don’t understand: why they removed Rob Schneider from the second movie’s cast. For no apparent reason at all, I guess. But regardless of that, the movie was hilarious! The only thing this movie did lack was the heart of the first film. Some scenes are just people in weird costumes going nuts and jumping on other people. I would recommend this movie for all Adam Sandler (or Kevin James, Chris Rock, Shaq, etc.) fans and people who love to laugh out loud!

Despicable Me 2

My rating: ratings4

The minions are back in Despicable Me 2! Gru (Steve Carell) is now making jellies and is no longer a villan. He has 3 adopted daghters, Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith and Agnes. One day, he is recruited by the Anti-Villan League (AVL) to track down the thief of the PX-41, a serum that transforms living beings into killing machines. While going undercover as a worker at a cupcake shop at a mall, Gru realizes that one of the suspects at the mall is actually El Macho, a villan who Gru thought had died 20 years earlier. This movie also stars Kristen Wiig, Russell Brand, Benjamin Bratt, Steve Coogan, Moises Arias, Ken Jeong, and Kristen Schaal.

I saw this movie with my family, and we all laughed out loud and enjoyed the movie. I think it was as funny and despicable as the first Despicable Me movie. I would recommend this movie for kids all ages. I think adults will also enjoy this hilarious film.
